Grab your derby hats, mint juleps + place your bets, this Saturday, May 5 marks the 144th Kentucky Derby at the famous Churchill Downs. The most exciting two minutes in sports is often referred to as "The Run for the Roses®"and has been an American Tradition year after year in KY. Here's a few fun facts about the Derby...
- 90% - the percent of women in attendance who don a hat at the Kentucky Derby
- 1,000 - the number of pounds of mint needed for the mint juleps consumed at the Kentucky Derby
- Each year, more than 400 red roses are sewn into a green satin backing with the seal of the Commonwealth on one end and the Twin Spires and the number of the race's current renewal on the other. Each garland is also adorned with a "crown" of roses, green fern and ribbon. The "crown", a single rose pointing upward in the center of the garland, symbolizes the struggle and heart necessary to reach the Derby Winner's Circle.
- The trophy is believed to be the ONLY solid gold trophy annually awarded to the winner of a major American sporting event. The trophy, which is topped by an 18kt gold horse + rider, includes horseshoe shaped handles, is 22" tall and weighs 56 ounces, excluding it's jade base. It is created by New England Sterling located in North Attleboro, MA! The entire trophy is handcrafted right here in New England and that makes us so proud!
